My Husky Puppy Is Shy

When I got Husky puppy Lara, she was very small compared to my two other dogs. Because of the big size difference, play can be risky and also scary for the small puppy. In the beginning, I supervised my dogs very closely, and still Lara got hurt when my Shiba (who is only about 32 pounds) accidentally ran over her.

My husky puppy is shy. My dog trainer colleague Aryn Hervel and I were discussing just this situation and I wanted to share her ideas which I don't think are mainstream and can be very helpful for shy puppies. When you have a scared puppy that is fearful of people, keep up your socializing efforts, but with a twist. Yes, my very shy puppy was scared of the other puppies for the first three classes. It didn't help that she got rushed by the instructors 3 or 4 adult Aussies when she arrived two times. At the third lesson, she started out veering way out of the way to avoid the other puppies, but by the end, she was interested in them and actually looked like. My family currently has a 13-week old Siberian Husky/Australian Shepherd mix puppy (DOB 2-5-19). I am not a novice dog owner, so when my sister got an Aussie/Husky mix puppy I offered to help her train the puppy. It was obvious from the first day that the puppy was scared and reserved. Different experts will give you different closing dates, ranging from 12 to 16 weeks old. Individual puppies will vary, too. I urge you to play it safe--socialize diligently from the minute you get your puppy home. Without good socialization, your puppy will likely be shy and skittish as he grows up.
