Now, imagine that you weren’t able to talk. Your mouth strength and play bite helped you communicate and determine your rank in society. Your mouthy mojo gave you respect in canine culture. You now have a small idea of what it’s like to be a puppy. Puppies interact with their surroundings largely through their mouths.

My lab puppy is mouthy. My dogs were active, working retrievers besides being in the show and obedience ring and the last thing I needed was a hard mouthed dog from foolish discipline or an overly mouthy one from no discipline. A mouthy, bitey, nippy, puppy is perfectly normal and I would actually be surprised if you were not experiencing some growing pains with a nippy puppy. As I said earlier I’ve been raising puppies for a while now and some of the others in my group have been puppy raisers for 25+ years and raised a dozen or more puppies in the guide dog program . My puppy Remington is 9 months old. He is a wonderful dog except for one thing. He won't stop biting. He has been through puppy classes and behaves flawlessly on a leash. He gets many walks and plays retrieve in the yard every day. He wants to play with people in the house and brings you his toys. Pinch Your Puppy’s Neck. If the second tip still does not work, then another method is to pinch your Labrador’s neck gently. Start by playing with your Lab and when he starts biting again, say “no”. Immediately pull your hand and pinch your Lab in the neck – but not too tightly. This way, your Lab should associate pinching with “no.”

Unfortunately, most Lab owners will take this behavior and commonly label the dog as a “freak” to its breed. To do so is wrong. The Labrador Retriever is just doing what it was designed to do and it is the owner’s responsibility to teach it what is and is not acceptable behavior. My dog gently "mouths" on me and other people whenever he greets someone. He’s friendly but this is annoying. What can I do? A. Greeting people can be one of the most exciting things a dog does. Unfortunately, the ways in which dogs cope with excitement, such as jumping up, barking or — in your dog's case — mouthing, are often at odds. An excited dog who didn’t learn bite inhibition as a puppy can cause harm when mouthing someone’s hand or arm and biting down too hard. What may seem like cute behavior in a puppy isn’t so amusing when he becomes an adult. Letting a puppy mouth your hands, skin, hair or clothing teaches him it’s OK to use us or our clothing as chew toys. My 10 week old Lab puppy who we got at 7 weeks old will not stop biting my older dog in the jowls and on the legs, my poor boxer is such a sweet guy he doesn’t want to hurt the puppy so he doesn’t stick up for himself enough. He makes the boxer bleed and is stressing him out a lot. Does anyone have any ideas.

My lab does not like loud noises like thunder lorries either.. and especially a Lab puppy will be very demanding of your time, yes.. At 4 months old most Labs are very mouthy and this sounds like very normal puppy behavior like she’s probably getting overly excited during play. Biting and nipping usually gets better after adult teeth. The jaws of an adult dog can cause significantly more pain than puppy teeth, and adult dogs can inadvertently cause injury while mouthing. Mouthing is often more difficult to suppress in adult dogs because adults aren’t as sensitive to our reactions as puppies are, and they’re usually more difficult to control physically because of their size. Nipping is a puppy thing; it’s interactive and playful. If you have an older puppy who still nips, you may be dealing with aggression. Nipping puppies are bossy and manipulative and need a firmer regimen. Mouthing is an attention-getting behavior. If your dog uses it to communicate a need to go out, respond. A puppy’s adolescence is a time in his life when experiences have a very lasting effect on him. It is crucial during this time to maintain your role as Alpha which provides security for him.

If you are new to the Labrador Retriever world and you have a new puppy, you may be wondering when Lab puppies finally calm down. First, for those that do not know, the Labrador Retriever breed is not for those that want to lay back on the couch and toss back a few beers. It’s important to help your puppy learn to curb his mouthy behavior. There are various ways, some better than others, to teach this lesson. The ultimate goal is to train your puppy to stop mouthing and biting people altogether. However, the first and most important objective is to teach him that people have very sensitive skin, so he must be. My black lab puppy just turned 9 weeks old today and I am experiencing pretty much the same thing you were experiencing. My puppy loves to play but most of the time we cannot even pet him because he bites our hands and arms every time we get close to him. The root of this problem lays in the fact that as a puppy, this dog grew up in an environment and with situations that didn’t properly shape this behavior pattern and in which he wasn’t properly addressed for this behavior or perhaps he was encouraged by accessing functional rewards (this is a type of reward that includes things like; going.
