I usually notice puppy bliss during the 4-6 month period as my puppy is still relatively small (compared to his full size) and cute, he behaves well, listens, and understands most of the basics. However, for some reason around 6 months puppies seem to hit a regression (at least mine do).

My pitbull puppy sleeps a lot. My pitt sleeps a lot! He sleeps all night and then when we let him in during the day he sleeps on the couch, then he just lays around and sleeps where ever else he can. He used to do this a lot and then when we let him out he would get super excited and literally sprint in circles as fast as he can around the yard. Although puppies are little bundles of energy, they usually sleep 18-20 hours a day. One minute your puppy may be a miniature tornado, and the next he’s fallen soundly asleep, almost mid-dash. Dogs sleep a lot more than most people do. Before you spend time and money trying to figure out why your dog is sleeping too much, first make sure that he actually is. If he is, the reason may be a life change, health issue, or diet. Your vet can help you pin down the cause and find a solution. If you are lucky, your puppy may be able to make it through the night during this stage. For puppies, catnaps have gone to the dogs, because young dogs need 18 to 20 hours of sleep per day to rest their developing brains. Behavior Changes. Your puppy already knows how to do all of the important stuff: eat, drink, poop, sleep and, of course, play.

As a veterinarian, I commonly hear that new puppy owners are alarmed by just how much a puppy sleeps. Dogs of all ages sleep more than us humans (lucky dogs, indeed), but the average number of hours puppies sleep a day is 16 to 18 — or even more. Puppies sleeping a lot isn't cause for concern. Puppy sleep hours can range from 18 to 20 a day, versus the 14 hours of daily sleep by an adult dog. This is because puppies are growing and they need their rest. Puppies Use a Lot of Energy. Puppies need more sleep than adult dogs because they have a lot going on in their lives. Puppies are born with their eyes and ears firmly closed and without any teeth. Although you won't see much external activity in a puppy during this period (all they want to do is eat and sleep), there's a LOT going on inside.. In fact this is a very critical stage of puppy development and all that sleeping is actually playing an important role as puppies do most of their growing during that time. The way your dog sleeps and their sleeping habits can say a lot about what they're feeling. Sleeping habits can give clues about a dog's health and happiness that you can interpret if you know.

Age plays a big part in how much a dog sleeps, too. For example, a puppy tends to sleep up to 16 to 18 hours a day, since growing up takes up a lot of energy. Older dogs spend almost the same. Why does my 6 month old pitbull sleeps a lot? Our pitbull puppy Tia sleeps all day long wakes up and plays in the evening then goes back to sleep and is sleep all night long is she just really lazy or doing a lot of growing right now? Answer Save. 12 Answers. Relevance. Anonymous. 1 decade ago. The average dog sleeps for about 12 to 14 hours per 24-hour cycle. That’s just the beginning, though. Puppies, who expend a lot of energy exploring and learning may need as much as 18 to 20 hours. Older dogs also tend to need more rest, as do certain breeds. Why Is My Dog Sleeping So Much All Of A Sudden? Different dogs vary in how much they sleep, just like humans do – but a change in the amount your dog is sleeping can be a cause for concern. If your dog is sleeping a lot more than usual, there could be many explanations – some more concerning than others.

Reasons Why a Puppy Is Itchy . When there is some sort of irritation to the skin the urge to itch or scratch soon follows. At a cellular level inside the body, histamine release is the main reason why a puppy itches but sometimes simply the annoyance of a reoccurring insect bite can also cause a puppy to scratch itself. As I write this, my dog is napping next to me. Every once in a while, she'll twitch in her sleep; her eyes, nose, lips, and feet moving as if she is dreaming about chasing something. Warm up your puppy's food by zapping it in the microwave for 10 seconds or so, which can unlock the food's aroma and pique your pup’s appetite. Spike your puppy's regular food with yogurt or cottage cheese for another good way to tempt your dog to eat or offer a small amount of a stinky canned product with high meat or fat content. Why is My Puppy Shaking While Sleeping? A dog who shakes while he sleeps could be doing so for a variety of reasons. First, your dog might actually be in pain; this is common in older dogs, as canine arthritis could have set in, or in dogs that have been hurt or injured recently. In these cases, the pain is just the dog’s soreness or aching.
